Death

24th May 1940 Northern France

An ordinary young English soldier, separated from his unit, weaponless, friendless and lost, finds himself in the bloody Battle of Calais. While hundreds of thousands of allied soldiers, British and French, are evacuated from Dunkirk, two thousand others are ordered by Winston Churchill to fight to the death in Calais. They must die so others may live. Giving that order, by his own testimony, made Churchill physically sick.

The young soldier accepts the order without question; after all, Churchill didn’t say whose death it was to be.

He learns how to kill. It comes easily to him and in great numbers. It comes so easily he doubts he’ll ever be able to stop.
